“I am not interested in painting; I am not interested in making a picture.  Then what the hell am I interested in?  I must be interested in this process.”

Philip Guston

Hello Mark Beck Studio Fans,

It’s been a minute because I’ve been so busy painting for two important shows coming up.

I read this quote by American Artist Philip Guston and it immediately struck home with me.  Facing a blank canvas is exciting but it’s also daunting.

Despite my best plans, I often take a different creative path from the one I originally considered. This sets me in the direction where each painting is a wholly new experience as I try not to rely on previously acquired skills or solutions that worked for other paintings. This process can be a roller coaster ride at times; I’ve had my share of artistic meltdowns due to this.

The older I get, the more difficult painting becomes.
Yes, with expanding skills comes higher standards  – as anyone who gets closer to mastering their chosen field well knows. I’m finding it more challenging to paint because I am pushing myself artistically. Both in subject matter and materials. As you can see, my work varies from landscapes to portraits, and I wouldn’t have it any other way; fresh and original, It keeps me in the creative flow.
So…Here are my newest paintings – the love from my labor.

I hope you enjoy these paintings as much as I enjoyed the process of creating them.  And if you wish to see any of them in person, just explore my art representation and GALLERIES page.

Enjoy!

Mark
